Awesome option for the apartment renter, May 25, 2011

So like many people, I rent an apartment. I happen to have a north-facing balcony that gets just enough sunlight to allow me to grow a few things.

This raised planter is awesome to say the least. It truly does what it claims in that it produces a lot with a little, and does it quite easily. One of the most beautiful things about this setup is that when planted properly it prevents over- and under-watering of plants. Soil columns packed into the corners wicks just the right amount of water up from the reservoir in the bottom of the planter, and the mulch cover prevents the water from evaporating excessively. At the same time, the screen in the bottom allows proper aeration of plant roots. As long as your remember to water it, this is pretty much “set it and forget it”. I’m currently growing three sweet basil plants (across the front of the planter) and 2 cherry tomato plants (across the back) in one planter. I thought they’d be too crowded, but the plants in this planter are literally twice the size of those which I also planted in pots.
