What is a Chimenea?

By Robin C Peters – Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/5285159

A chimenea is a portable, outdoor, front-loading fireplace. This is a freestanding fireplace – it is not attached to a building. It has a chimney coming out of the top to vent the smoke, and usually has a bulbous-looking body. Today, most people use chimeneas to warm up their outdoor patio areas, to warm their garden plants, and to provide a nice fire feature as part of the landscape…

Originally made of clay, chimeneas were invented by Mexican tribesmen who developed them as means of baking and as a way to provide heat for their family. The distinctive long chimney design ensured the rain was kept at bay while allowing good air flow..

Due to their unique design, chimeneas are now fast becoming a regular part of many people’s backyards and gardens.

These outdoor fireplaces come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. The most common is the clay chimenea, but you can now get chimeneas made of cast iron, aluminum alloy, bronze or steel and in a variety of styles ranging from traditional to terracotta to modern. Many serve as garden ornaments, others for patio heat on cool summer nights, while more still double as a barbeque grills.

So which type is right for you?

Clay chimeneas are the most affordable, but need to be treated with care. Those made of cast iron, bronze or aluminum alloy require the least maintenance and will last the longest, but do cost more to purchase.

Whichever chimenea you choose, be aware of a few basic fire safety precautions:

  • Chimeneas are for outdoor use only. Never place a chimenea directly on a wooden deck; they should always be placed on a flat fire-proof surface like rock, concrete or paving stones.
  • Always choose a location for your chimenea that’s free of over-hanging trees, branches, or awnings. The space above the chimenea should be kept completely clear.
  • Never use chemicals to light the fire, and always use long sleeved gloves when cooking, particularly if using a metal chimenea as these can get extremely hot.
  • Always have a fire extinguisher nearby – either a foam or dry powder variety. Never use water to extinguish your chimenea as this will generate huge amounts of smoke, and clay chimeneas may crack.
