Basic Lawn Mower Maintenance
Some simple things to do to keep your lawn mower tip top.Is there anything less fun, then trying to start a lawn mower whose motor won't turn over? Sure... but getting your lawn mower to start after a long winter can be very frustrating. Doing a few routine maintenance tasks before you storing the lawn mower for the winter can save you time in the spring, prolong the life of your lawn mower, and save you money over the long haul.Of course, if you didn't take care of this task last winter... doing these few simple maintenance chores before the next time you use your mower again is a good idea and can be very beneficial. And there is something very satisfactory with a couple of hours of hands on work on a Saturday morning. First thing to do is to disconnect the spark plug wire(s) or otherwise ensure that the mower cannot start up accidentially. Safety is a always a good place to begin. While you can perform this maintenace list anytime, I am going to proceed as if you have just finished your last mowing of the season: Wash and dry your lawn mower after the mowing season is over. A power blower can be used in removing grass and debris from the underside of your lawn mower and other hard to reach areas. You can also use a garden trowel or similar tool to pry off caked on grass.
If your lawn mower engine is air-cooled, use a stick or wooden dowel to remove any residue from the cooling fins. If you have a lawn mower with a water-cooled engine, check the coolant level and refill the reservoir as needed. Clean the radiator cooling fins with a strong jet of water. Next drain the fuel tank and replace the fuel filter. The air filter housing should be cleaned and the air filter replaced. Now check the spark plug(s) for corrosion and wear. If the spark plug(s) are showing some wear, don't bother to try cleaning them up. The spark plug is inexpensive and easy to replace. Remove any debris before removing the spark plug. And here is a valuable tip: Use a bit of anti-seize compound when you replace the old spark plug. The spark plu will be easier removal next year. Clean and lubricate the throttle linkages and the choke. Apply grease to the mower deck and all the fittings. To make this task easier, remove the mower deck. You will want to remove the deck, anyway, to sharpen the blades. Unless you have acres of grass to mow, you can normally limit sharpening the blades to this once a year maintenance time. And you will be very happy that you got those blades sharpeened, when you take the mower out next Spring. If you are like me, you let the grass get a little long and wild before the first mowing. Those sharply honed blades will make the first mowing easier. Now clean the battery terminals. Replace the old lawn mower battery if you need to. As you maybe doing with your car battery, you can prevent corrosion of the terminals, if you apply grease to the posts after the end of each mowing season. Change the oil in the engine crankcase and replace the oil filter. Again remember to drain the gas from your lawn mower before storing it for the winter. Summer Maintenance. During the long summer mowing season, be sure to check your oil level regularly and clean out the air filter as well. Check the condition of the fuel filter as well. When washing your lawn mower and removing any debris after mowing the lawn, wait unti after the mower has cooled to do so. A trim looking lawn and the smell of mown grass is all part of the reward we get going about mowing the lawn, each and every year. A lawn mower that runs great and is well maintained will make this job more pleasurable and easier all summer long. So do your annual maintenance to keep your lawn mower performing at the highest level possible. It will be easier to mow your lawn, you will save money and your lawn mower will work great for years to come...
