Garden Room Boundaries

Dividing your landscape into different themes.
When you divide the areas of your landscape into several sections and areas, you are creating what are known as garden rooms.

Garden rooms are spaces where you plant, grow, and display different ideas in gardening in various creative methods. It is a way of displaying different themes or purposes in your garden.

One garden room could be a rose garden. Another could be centered around a water garden. A third garden room in your landscape could focuse only on plants that have yellow flowers. Garden rooms are creative choices, limited only by your imagination.

To create the rooms in your landscape you will want to plant actual boundary lines or walls. One type of wall is to grow a living fence using larger types of plants.

Which dependable shrubs and hedges that you choose for fences or as walls between the garden rooms depend upon your particular climate and your personal tastes, but here are some good plant candidates:

Forsythia is a spring flowering shrub that would make a lovely enclosure for a country garden room lovely. As the spring months pass, the flowers will die off, but the leaves on this shrub will fill in as a wall nicely.

Broadleaf evergreens are another type of shrub that is very popular in creating garden rooms. One in particular is the boxwood. The boxwood can be nicely shaped either rounded or with a boxy style. While boxwood takes several years to grow very tall, it is a very thick shrub. It will quickly create wonderful walls for your garden rooms. The leaves are tiny, appearing in the late spring months and last until the very coldest of the winter months.

Lilac - Old Glory 2

Much as there are many themes for your garden rooms, there are many 'ways' to create growing walls for those private rooms. For example, Lilacs can be a "flowering boundary type" plant that will spread albeit slowly. The flowers on the taller lilac bushes cam create a sweet backdrop for many garden rooms.

Another plant to consider is the Border Privet. It is a smaller shrub, but is fast growing. It is fascinating to watch this plant grow and fill in the walls of any room in the garden.

Juniper evergreens, holly, burning bushes, and even rose bushes can produce what will look like walls or seperations of space. When you are creating several different areas in your landscape, you have hundreds of choices of plants, shrubs, or even bushes that will fill in nicely.

One important thing to remember as you visualize how your walls will look over time... The final display inside your garden room is going to be accented by the type of plants that you use to enclose the actual room. There are many ways to match and contrast the interior plants with your boundary wall plants.
